Subtitles are especially helpful for those who are learning a foreign language, as we do. For sure, it is easier to understand what was said when we can also read the sentences. Every actor uses a different accent or dialect. Some of them mumble, some whisper, and the others stutter. But for sure, we can notice less when we focus on subtitles rather than on the video itself. I am just curious—was this research conducted on native speakers of a given language or on foreigners?

piotr.grela - The survey is done by the BBC and they examined the UK viewers.
It's difficult to answer if they were native because eg. in London, almost a half of its population were born overseas.

kktm - Shouldn't it be "was born" instead of "were born"? And "half" instead of "a half"? "was done" instead of "is done", "BBC" instead of "the BBC"? - 3 lata temu zmieniany: 3 lata temu
piotr.grela - Kktm you're partially right, mate.

The word population is a collective noun that can take either a singular or plural verb, depending on the intention of the authour.

English grammar isn't clear, innit :-)

I stopped worrying about my grammar. You can use perfect English grammar (a such thing doesn't exist), but without good pronunciation you can be easily detected as a bloody foreigner :-)
My focus on learning English now is pronunciation.

darkobo - I think Peter used "were" correctly because not all of them were born in the same country. - 3 lata temu

Oh boy, collective noun- another meaningless term for me:).
Exception to the exception, that's what English grammar is all about. I just ignored the beast a long time ago.
But as it is a language learner's platform, when I see something that for me looks bizarre I raise a topic for a discussion.

However here in your sentence, you used "a half" before "population" which clearly states what the intention of the author was- I mean single, not plural form, right?

piotr.grela - In writing English, it's important to use the correct grammar. In the speaking English, grammar rules are more relaxed.
If someone says: "He don't..." I can still understand him without difficulty.

IMHO, pressure in learning English should be shifted from learning grammar to practising on everyday communication.
